Is it safe to send DAT tapes through the mail?

Q: I want to send DAT tapes from my camcorder to my parents. Is it safe to send them through the mail? How susceptible are they to damage by heat and/or cold?

A: I remember in my old company we sent DAT tapes to Europe; however we were more concerned about mail getting lost then temperatures.
I would recommend sending them FedEx with a thick layer of bubble wrap around it and in a plastic bag.

If you have access to a computer, at least make a copy of your files. Wouldn't it make sense to transfer files from the Camcorder to the computer and then burn a DVD which is easier to send and in the meantime easy to watch in a DVD player or computer. DAT tapes sound like an ancient technology to me.

How would you keep your .dat file from converting to a text file when opened?

Q: I need the .dat file to remain as such when uploading it to an Oracle vendor website. The .dat file should be opened with Notepad but it has a text file icon instead.

A: when saving the file, enclose the filename with double quotes. For example, save it as "filename.dat", not simply filename.dat,

How can I change the "swf" format sounds to "mp3" or "dat" format?

Q: How can I change the "swf" format sounds to "mp3" or "dat" format?

A: swf or shock wave flash programs, have animation and music too.

You need to usually split or record the audio into a particular format first, usually "wav"

then use a converter to take it from WAV to MP3, just google the words "WAV MP3 CONVERTER"

If we keep converting a file excample from flv to avi, avi to dat, then dat to mpeg, will quality lose?

Q: If we keep converting a file excample from flv to avi, avi to dat, then dat to mpeg, will quality lose?

A: There is a little confusion in what you are asking.

AVI is not a format - it is a container. If you convert from FLV to uncompressed frames (in an AVI container) there will be no loss. If you convert from FLV to any other lossless format there will be loss.

Again, DAT is not a format. DAT is usually the extensive given to a VCD MPEG stream. Converting to MPEG will again cause loss as MPEG is not a lossless codec.

In reality though, the loss will be minimilized by using reasonable codec bit-rates as FLV formatted videos are generally of low quality anyway. If the recoded videos are done at a high enough bitrate, you should have negligable degradation.

If you don't actually need to convert them, but just want to watch them offline, consider getting VideoLAN (www.videolan.org) which can play FLV's

What is the most suitable DAT prep book for me?

Q: I am a second year pre-med or pre-dental student at UF, and I want to make an early start of studying for DAT since I am done with Organic chem ,gen chem, calculus, and biology.

Not only with a good science preparation, English is my second language, so I would need a book that has a good preparation for the verbal section.

What brand would you recommend for me?

A: The best prep book is the best one for you. Go the library or a book store and spend 30 minutes with each prep book they have, the one you like best that matches your learning style is the one for you. For English, read books with challenging vocabulary, again go to the library and have them recommend something in an area of interest to you (librarians have lists of grade level books) and read, read, read. Reading is the absolute best way to learn vocabulary.

How to convert dat file to readable format?

Q: A friend send a dat file to my archive folder but I can't seem to convert the data contents to view.
Do I need to use a certain software/program to open the file or do I need to do an upload or something?
Appreciate workable solutions to my problem. Thanks.

A: Data file could be anything at all. Usually it require certain software to use it.

Try to open it with notepad and see maybe there is a clue in it.
If its not readable then at the beginning or at the end you might read a few lines those are copyright or something that could give you idea of what software to use or where to go for more...
Or ask your friend.
